Hay-on-Wye is a top destination for bookworms all over the world. As I’ve always lived in Wales, I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times. Now I live even closer than ever and it’s just a short drive over, plus I am lucky enough to have book-loving friends who will come with me and understand the need to peruse the shelves for hours on end.
I did a little overnight trip with a friend earlier this year (literally feels like yesterday) so I thought I’d share a couple of snaps and recommendations.
Bookshops to visit in Hay
Richard Booth’s Bookshop – this is probably my favourite bookshop in Hay. It’s huge, with great wooden floors and a mix of old and new books. Plus there’s a cinema and a café!
Murder & Mayhem – this is the shop in the photo below. How amazing is that shop front? Perfect for crime and mystery lovers.
The Old Electric Shop – my friend introduced me to this place on this visit. It’s a shop/bookshop/café and everything is so eclectic and interesting. I could have spent hours in here.
Addyman Books – this shop is like a labyrinth. So many rooms to explore and something for everyone.
Green Ink Booksellers – one of the newest second-hand bookshops in Hay. I like the pared back vibes and there’s always an interesting selection.

Other places to visit in Hay
To eat:
The Granary – relaxed, cosy, lots of choices and it feels like real, family cooking.
Tomatitos – we went to this tapas restaurant for dinner and it was delicious. Everyone was really friendly, but I’d be sure to book because it was very busy.
The Old Black Lion – this is where we stayed but there is also a lovely looking restaurant too which I would definitely try next time I go.
To shop:
Bartums – if you love stationery, please go here. You’ll love it.
Flow – a gorgeous lifestyle shop. There are clothes, outdoorsy stuff, homeware and books. I could have bought EVERYTHING.
